NOVEMBER 2019
Hello
I am really sorry that I didn’t do an October update. Not sure why!
News
Quite a bit has happened since the last update. The club won the Mary Black Rosebowl at the Scottish Clubs competition. We had a great night of celebration at our Awards Night. Loads of swimmers passed their figures grades and moved groups as the new synchro year started. The 13-15s and Juniors went to Lanzarote for a warm weather training camp and developed their routines for the coming year.
This month we had our AGM and our Club Figure Competition. Results of the competition are now on our website. Well done to everyone who took part. We also had a trial session and now have five new swimmers in the Beginner group. Welcome!
Display
Our Christmas display is on Sunday at 5pm. This is to show you the routines they have been working on so far this year. As the ‘year’ is only two months’ old most of the routines are shorter than they will be come competition, but they have been working hard to show you something. Please don’t come much before 5pm or you will be watching the rehearsals!! If swimmers can all be at studio one at 3pm, that would be great. Swimmers will be free to go at 6pm.
Training
Training continues for the next two weeks, with the following exceptions:
Thursday 5 December – Adult come and try for all parents (male and female) to try out what your kids are doing, and anyone else who fancies giving it a go. It is a free session for all parents but we ask for a donation of £10 to the club for anyone else.
Sunday 8 December – training is on but may be disrupted due to the Scottish Diving competition beforehand. Once we do get in it will be a fun session.
Sunday 15 December – no training due to a swimming competition taking place in the RCP.
Training then finishes for the Christmas break and returns on Wednesday 8 January.
Grades
The next grade day is on Sunday 2 February. Following this the groups will change again. Anyone meeting the age group criteria will be given the option of moving into the age group or remaining in the Grade 2+ group until the end of the season. We will discuss those options with each individual swimmer.
Competitions
All National competition dates, except the Scottish Clubs, are confirmed, and they are:
English National Age Groups – for 12&under and 13-15 groups – 7/8 March – Manchester
Scottish Figure Competition – for all those who meet the Age Group criteria – Saturday 21 March – RCP
English National Championships – for the Junior age group – 18/19 April – Nottingham
Scottish Nationals and Age Groups – for all who meet the age group criteria – 20/21 June – Drumchapel
English Combo Cup – for those who meet the age group criteria – 4 July – London
Scottish Club Championships – for the whole club – 3 October – To Be Confirmed
Unfortunately, we still do not have the date for the novice event but it is usually in May or early June. We are really disappointed about the decision to remove recreational routines from the Scottish Nationals but are hopeful that the West District will follow the East’s lead and add recreational routines to the novice event programme. If not we will try to find another event for our Grade 2+ swimmers.
If you are unsure which dates to put in your diary for next year please ask. There is also a competition matrix on the website to help you understand which swimmers compete at each competition. Also on the website is our planner with dates for the full year.
Camps
Everyone in our Beginner, Grade 0/1, Grade 2+ and 12&under groups should have received an email about next year’s Whithaugh Park training camp. If you haven’t but think you should have, please let us know.
Flowchart
We had a query about how decisions are made with respect to requests for swimmers for displays, events, etc, so we have created a flowchart to explain it. It is attached.
Finally, as always our usual reminders:
All pools we use have public using the facilities at the same time. Our swimmers must be courteous when using the showers and changing areas. For example, they are not to ‘reserve’ cubicles. Also no bags should be left unattended. They should either be in a locker or on the poolside.
Our responsibility as a club for a swimmers ends when they leave the poolside / land studio. Please ensure that you have an agreed meeting place and that they know that if you are not there they should come find an adult member of the club so that we can wait with them. However, they do continue to be a member of Scottish Swimming so rules about using mobile phones in the changing rooms still stand. There is a zero tolerance policy to taking photos / videos / etc in the changing room.
As ever, thanks for the support you give your children, and the club.
Best wishes
Vicky, on behalf of the committee and coaches
SEPTEMBER 2019
Hi there
All the swimmers have been working really hard on their routines for the Scottish Clubs Championships in Inverness on Saturday. Good luck to everyone.
Congratulations to all our swimmers for passing their routine grades. A 100% pass rate! A special mention to Anya and Jessie who got Silver in their routine grade.
This Saturday’s competition marks the end of the 2019 synchro ‘year’. We hope you will all be joining us on Friday 27 September for our awards night to celebrate it.
I hope you all received my email stating the date change for the AGM. It is now on Sunday 3 November.
In the August update I said that the groups would be changing on Sunday 22 September. However, as there is a figure grade assessment day on Sunday 6 October, it is better to change groups after that date. Therefore, at all sessions between 22 September and 6 October, the swimmers will be working on grades. The only exception to this is for the Junior age group – Baylee, Ellie and Kiku will move from the 13-15s to the Juniors on 22 September.
Once we have the figure grade day results I will communicate the groups for the 2019/20 synchro year.
I will be sending out an email about the grade day later today or tomorrow.
Sadly we are saying goodbye, or hopefully “au revoir”, to Laura as she is moving down South to add English Law to her Scottish Law degree. We wish her every success and are looking forward to her coming back to the club whenever she can. Laura – you will be missed.
We have provisional dates for the
2019/20. They are on the planner on the website here:
http://edinburghsynchro.co.uk/calendar/. Your coach will tell you which competitions apply to you but if in doubt please put them all in your diary and ask nearer the time as some swimmers may move groups during the year.
Finally, as well as the whatsapp reminder I thought it best to put here as well that all pools we use have public using the facilities at the same time. Our swimmers must be courteous when using the showers and changing areas. For example, they are not to ‘reserve’ all the cubicles. Also no bags should be left unattended. They should either be in a locker or on the poolside.
Thanks
Vicky
AUGUST 2019
Hello
I hope you had a wonderful break over the summer, if you got one! I sometimes wonder whether the summer is actually more tiring!!
We are now back to normal for training:
Tuesdays – Leith Victoria is closed for refurbishment so the stamina session has been moved to Warrender pool on Tuesdays at 8pm.
Wednesdays – Beginners 7pm, Rest 8pm
Thursdays – Age groups 7pm
Sundays – Land 3pm, Pool 4pm
Please keep looking at the calendars on the website for week-by-week details.
On Saturday 31 August we have the Porty Beach Busk. Thank you to everyone who has offered to come along and help / busk.
We are straight into serious training for the routine grade assessment day on Sunday 8 September. I sent an email today to all those who the coaches would like to enter. Please ensure that you have paid your invoice by Monday 26 August, as we need to pay Scottish Swimming for the entries that week. As this is the first time we have done routine grades it is going to be a learning experience for us all! Oh, and in the email I meant 12 noon – not 12am!!!
We have our final competition of the synchro year, Scottish Clubs, on Saturday 21 September in Inverness. Attached is the final team sheet. It is going to be a really long day as we will get the bus up and back, but it should be great fun. More details about the bus, etc, will be sent out in the next week or so.
On Sunday 22 September we start our new groups for the 2019/20 synchro year. It will be an easy session, as everyone will be tired, but it is important to come, especially if you are changing groups. We will be sending out details of the new groups in the next week or so.
On Friday 27 September we have our awards night, to celebrate the successes of the 2019 ‘short’ synchro year. Then on Sunday 29 September we have our AGM, to again review the previous year and to set ourselves up for the coming year. Please put both of these dates in your diaries as we would like everyone from the club to be at both.
We don’t yet have dates for competitions for the next synchro year. We’ll let you know as soon as we do.
Child protection
Another quick reminder that our responsibility for a swimmers ends when they leave the poolside / land studio.
Thanks
Vicky
JUNE / JULY 2019
Hi there
It has been a busy month! The club had two great competitions – the Synchro for All competition on 1 June and SNAGs on 15/16 June. Write-ups for both competitions, and loads of photos and videos, are on our website.
The final competition before the summer is the Combo Cup on 6 July. We wish our two teams the best of luck.
Once we get the entry pack for the Scottish Clubs Championships on 21 September, we will contact you with the details. In the meantime, please keep that day free.
The club also had a great afternoon on the beach for our annual bbq. Thank you to everyone who helped with the organisation. Our next event is the Porty Beach Busk on 31 August. Please support it as best you can.
Training times change for the summer as follows:
Mondays – this session has finished for the summer and we hope to start again on 26 August.
Wednesdays – training as normal on Wednesday 3 July. After that there is no 7pm session and all swimmers are to attend the 8 – 9:30pm session. The 7pm Wednesday session starts again on Wednesday 21 August.
Thursdays – training is on as normal on Thursday 4 July. It starts again on Thursday 22 August.
Sundays – pool training is on as normal throughout the summer (except Sunday 14 July as there is an event in the RCP). Land training will only be in studio one for everyone.
All dates are on our website.
We have ensured that there will be at least one trained coach, plus other volunteers, at all sessions. However, it may not be possible to coach each group individually as usual.
If you aren’t able to come to training, please remember to keep up your land training. Videos and guides are on our website.
We wish you all a great summer.
Vicky and the rest of the committee and coaches

Please ensure that you have an agreed meeting place and that they know that if you are not there they should come find an adult member of the club so that we can wait with them. However, they do continue to be a member of Scottish Swimming so rules about using mobile phones in the changing rooms still stand. There is a zero tolerance policy to taking photos / videos / etc in the changing room.
Good luck to everyone competing in, and volunteering at, the upcoming competitions. You make your club proud!

APRIL 2019
Hello
Since the last time I wrote the groups have been working hard on figures and routines. The Scottish Figure Competition was a success, with Edinburgh swimmers winning one silver and four bronzes. Thanks especially to those parents and swimmers who volunteered to be officials or runners at the competition. You are the reason it was a success. A full report of the competition is on the website.
The Easter holidays are about to start. This means that some coaches will be away over the next couple of weeks. At present we are sure that all sessions will be on, but it may be that training is with a different coach / poolside helper.
Please don’t forget that training is cancelled on Sunday 14 April and Sunday 28 April due to events at the RCP. Monday training is also cancelled for the holiday and it starts up again on 29 April. Wednesdays and Thursdays will be continuing through the holidays, unless notified on whatsapp.
Figure grade assessment day
It won’t be long until the next figure grade assessment day – Sunday 5 May. Here are some dates for you to remember:
Sunday 7 April – split test on the poolside at the RCP between land training and the pool session. Everyone hoping to be put forward for the grade assessment day will need to come to this. Please can I stress that this is to ensure that each swimmer has the correct technique and that they are low enough that they will not get zeros. We don’t want any swimmers to push themselves and risk injury. If you are away on this date it is very important that Margo sees your splits before the deadline for entries.
Wednesday 17 April – this is the deadline for coaches to determine who is ready to be put forward for the assessment day. If you haven’t heard whether you will be put forward by the end of training on Wednesday, please ask your coach.
I will contact all swimmers who have been put forward to confirm whether they want to do it and Neil will send out invoices. The fee is £15. You will need to have paid by Sunday 21 April.
Any questions at all, please ask. This is the last figure grade assessment day of the 18/19 synchro year. The next one will be in December.
Competitions
The information is starting to go out about the next three competitions. Again, if you don’t hear anything and expect to be going to one of them, please ask your coach.
Saturday 1 June – Synchro for All. Swimmers from our Beginners, Grade 0/1 and Grade 2+ groups will be competing. A bus will be taking swimmers to the competition at the Carnegie pool.
15/16 June – Scottish National Age Groups. Swimmers from the age groups, plus hopefully the recreational combination teams, will be competing. A bus will be taking swimmers to Drumchapel on both days.
Saturday 6 July – Combo Cup, London. Two teams are competing from the age groups. Travel and accommodation arrangements are being made.
Kit
The kit order has gone in. We had some requests for swimming costumes, but we didn’t reach the minimum order threshold. Please can anyone wanting a costume (even if you have told one of us before) complete the form on the website here https://www.edinburghsynchro.co.uk/club_kit/, and we will order as soon as we have more than five.
Dates for your diary
Sunday 15 May – poolside warmup workshop (age groups 2pm, non-age groups 3pm)
Saturday 22 June – Beach BBQ (sorry for the wrong date on the previous update email)
We hope that you have a good break over the Easter holidays, if you are having one.
Vicky and the committee
MARCH 2019
Hello
On Saturday 23 March the RCP will be hosting the Scottish Figure Competition. We have 22 swimmers entered into that competition, and for the first time we have swimmers competing in the technical routines section. We wish them all the best of luck. If anyone wants to support the team please come down. The competition is on between 1pm and 7pm.
We are also getting organised for the rest of the competitions this ‘synchro year’:
Saturday 1 June – Synchro for All Competition (all non-age group groups)
15/16 June – Scottish National Age Groups (all age groups on both day, non-age groups on Sunday)
Saturday 6 July – Combo Cup (age group combination teams)
Saturday 21 September – Scottish Clubs (all swimmers)
We sent out emails this week about the Synchro for All Competition and the Combo Cup. Please respond as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so.
We do not have enough pool time to work on everything that we would like so we have asked the strength and conditioning specialist who worked with Synchro Caledonia, Calumn Duthie, to develop two short warm ups that the swimmers can do on the poolside before they get into the pool. These can also be done at home before doing land sets or before doing their own stamina or synchro pool training. Having swimmers who have already warmed up their muscles before getting into the pool means that the coaches can start doing synchro-specific training in the pool earlier, and will mean fewer injuries. In order to ensure that the swimmers have the correct technique, Calumn will be coming to training on Sunday 12 May to teach the warm up to the swimmers. As this warm up is to be done on the poolside before coaches arrive, and at home, we also ask that parents attend so that they can ensure that their child does the warm up correctly. There will also be a chance for parents to ask Calumn any questions they have about strength and conditioning training. There will be two sessions:
2pm – Age group swimmers
3pm – Non-age group swimmers
Both sessions will be in Studio One and will be instead of normal land training. Age group swimmers will work on walk throughs once their session has finished.
Please put this in your diary as we need as many swimmers and parents as possible to attend.
Other dates for your diary:
Sunday 17 March – training cancelled due to an event in the RCP
Sunday 7 April – Split test
Sunday 28 April – training cancelled due to an event in the RCP
Sunday 5 May – figure grade assessment day at Bo’ness
Saturday 29 June – Beach BBQ
Poolside volunteers
We would like to thank everyone who offered to go on the team manager course that we put on the whatsapp groups last week. We would also like to put a call out for poolside helper volunteers. These are parents who come onto the poolside to help the coaches. No experience is necessary. The main role of a poolside volunteer to begin with is to be an extra pair of eyes on the swimmers. Some of our groups are large and it is helpful to the coach to be able to concentrate on one swimmer at a time, knowing that the other swimmers are being supervised. Parents of the newer swimmers are particularly welcome as they can learn about synchro at the same time as their child, which is very helpful to the child’s development. Poolside helpers are not required to come every week – they can decide how often they come. If you would like to become a poolside helper, please can you let Claire, me or Laura know.
Child protection
We would like to remind you that our responsibility for the swimmers during training sessions begins and ends on the poolside. Please ensure that you have an agreed meeting place and that they know that if you are not there they should find an adult member of the club so that we can wait with them. However, they continue to be a member of Scottish Swimming so rules about using mobile phones in the changing rooms still stand. There is a zero tolerance policy to taking photos / videos / etc in the changing room.
As always, please do not hesitate to ask any questions.
Thanks
Vicky and the committee
FEBRUARY 2019
Thank you to everyone who came to our AGM and to our Awards Night. It is always good to look back on the year to see how much has been achieved and to celebrate those achievements. Photos are on our website.Welcome to our nine new swimmers who have joined us following our trial session on 27 January. We hope you enjoy your time with us.
We have put together a
‘Who to contact’ sheet so that it is easy for you to determine who to contact regarding various issues, and where information is held on the website. It is attached. You will notice that all committee members now have their own ‘Edinburgh Synchro’ email addresses. This is for continuity and also so that you can know who is contacting you and why. Please use them if you have to contact someone about the club.
The
new fee structure comes into effect on 1 March. You will receive an invoice soon with the details of the fee that relates to you. Please make sure that the standing order is amended for the new amount and that it is set to come into our account on the first of each month. You will not receive an invoice every month – only if there is a fee change.
If the swimmer moves from a Non-Age Group to an Age Group or visa versa, the fee change will begin on the first of the following month. An invoice will be sent to remind you of the change.
We have a new
stamina session on Mondays at 8pm in Leith Victoria Swim Centre. It is for swimmers with Grade One and above and it is to build up stamina and lung capacity. It isn’t a swimming lesson so if you currently go to a swimming club session at that time please continue with that.
Thank you to everyone who has completed and returned the
Codes of Conduct and Consent forms. We only have three outstanding, which is great. I will be contacting them individually.
Unfortunately we still have a lot of outstanding
Privacy Notice emails. I will be emailing those who have not yet completed the online form this week.
The next
grade assessment day is on 17 February. All swimmers who have been entered should have paid their invoices by now. Good luck to everyone. Training is on for all those not at the grade day. Once swimmers have finished their assessment they are encouraged to come back to training if possible.
The next competition is the
English National Age Groups on 2/3 March. Eight members of the 13-15 team are going to Manchester to compete. We wish them well.
We have our own
Club Figure Competition on Sunday 10 March at 3pm. All swimmers in the club are encouraged to compete. Beginners will do two figures and all other swimmers will do four figures. Swimmers will be competing against other swimmers at the same grade level and/or age group. It is a very relaxed competition and is intended to help the swimmers get used to competing in figures, which helps for both competitions and grade assessment days. I will send out the full information after the grade assessment day. If you are unable to make it, please let me know.
There will be a
training camp for Beginners, Grade 0/1 and the 12&unders on the weekend of 17 – 19 May at Whithaugh Park. We encourage all swimmers to go if possible. It is a fun team building weekend and they will be working on their figures and routines for the competitions in June. Hilary, the camp coordinator will be contacting you (or has already) about it.
I have been asked to clarify the club’s position on
make up for routines in competitions:
– It is up to each team to determine whether they will wear make up for a routine or not. The coach has the final decision.
– If nothing is said about make up, the assumption is that the team will not wear it.
– If make up is worn, the club recommends that only lipstick, mascara and eye shadow should be worn as the rules state that it can only ‘enhance natural beauty’. No theatrical make up is allowed.
– Lipstick and mascara cannot be shared so each swimmer must have their own. If the team is wearing it, the coach will let the swimmers know what they need well ahead of a competition.
– Solos and duets can determine their own make up, but the same rules apply.
– If anyone is allergic to any make up it is important that they let the club and the coach know.
Make up is not allowed at any training sessions, grade assessment days or in figure sections of competitions.
Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
Thanks
I hope you had a restful break and are ready for another year. It was good to see so many swimmers at our first session yesterday.
Please remember to be on the poolside ready 15 minutes in advance of the start time to do your poolside warm-up.
Each group will have a meeting at the beginning of the year which will be lead by the coach(es) as well as Margo and Claire. Please can all swimmers and a parent / guardian attend as they will be going through important information. The times are:
